Wallpaper stripping and hanging

The corners won’t be plastered or papertaped, the walls can be bowed, wallboard joins may also not be plastered.

The process of ensuring the walls are paint ready can be meticulous. It’s important that the stripping is done properly so that only the wallpaper and backing paper are removed without damaging the paper face of the wallboard as this would need more extensive plaster repair.

To deal with old wallpaper, you can strip it, replaster and paint; replaster and rehang wallpaper; reline with lining paper and paint; or just paint over the wallpaper if it’s in good condition. Note though that vinyl wallpaper has to be sealed with a sealer before overcoating with an acrylic paint.

Older houses in New Zealand are generally wallpapered because the joins in the gib or wallboard were plastered to a low level when the house was built. If you have old wallpaper, the walls won’t be good enough to paint on directly. Be careful when dealing with old homes as there’s a high risk that the joins will crack with earthquakes or house movement.
