Protect your home from borers. There are about seven species of wood-boring insects in New Zealand that can attack the timbers of your home or office. The most common is the Common House Borer or Woodworm. Another one is the Native House Borer.

Adult borers lay up to 100 eggs on bare timber or flight holes. The larvae will bore through the wood and eat it with yeasts in the stomachs breaking down cellulose in the wood. After 3 years the larvae will pupate in a chamber near the surface and exit the wood by eating to the surface and creating a flight hole. It mates and will lay eggs again.

If there is an infestation, a thorough survey is important to know the extent of it. A few flight holes may be visible of painted weather boards but the interior of the timbers are likely badly damaged.

It is the same treatment of timbers to remove borer infestation for all species. Treat any bare wood with Kiwicare NO borer fluid as this insecticide will penetrate deep into the timber and kill the larvae. This will protect the wood for many years. Inject flight holes with Kiwicare NO Borer Injection fluid with an aerosol and nozzle for fitting into holes. The aerosol will force insecticide into the labyrinth created by the borer larva killing any larva nearby. It will prevent adult beetles from laying eggs in the flight holes as well.

During flight season, use Kiwicare NO Borer Borafume Bombs in roof voids and sub-floor areas to knock down adult beetles that could lay eggs on exposed timbers and protect the surface timbers. Borers prefer timber with moisture so make sure your sub-floor is dry and well ventilated. Look for any plumbing leaks and unblock air vents. Check if there are leaks in the roof and if terracotta or concrete tiles are well sealed as these can be like sponges soaking up water and increasing humidity on roof voids.
