Protect your home from borers. There are about seven species of wood-boring insects in New Zealand that can attack the timbers of your home or office. The most common is the Common House Borer or Woodworm. Another one is the Native House Borer.

Adult borers lay up to 100 eggs on bare timber or flight holes. The larvae will bore through the wood and eat it with yeasts in the stomachs breaking down cellulose in the wood. After 3 years the larvae will pupate in a chamber near the surface and exit the wood by eating to the surface and creating a flight hole. It mates and will lay eggs again.

Be careful when dealing with old homes as there’s a high risk that the joins will crack with earthquakes or house movement.
